Trump to Unveil Gaza Peace Plan at UN Amid Rising Civilian Death Toll and Diplomatic Pressure:
New York, September 23 — Former U.S. President Donald Trump is set to present a controversial plan aimed at ending Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza and outlining a future for the war-ravaged Palestinian enclave. The proposal is expected to be shared during a high-level meeting with key Arab and Muslim leaders on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Tuesday. According to sources cited by Israel’s Channel 12 and Axios, Trump will meet with leaders from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Indonesia, and Pakistan. The agenda reportedly includes discussions on an eventual Israeli military withdrawal from Gaza, the deployment of regional peacekeeping forces, and the framework for a post-war transition and reconstruction effort. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed Trump’s meeting with regional leaders and said the U.S. aims to "facilitate a long-term solution that brings peace, stability, and prosperity to both Palestinians and Israelis." Peacekeeping Forces and Statehood Recognition In a symbolic gesture of support, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto—who is expected to attend Tuesday’s meeting—announced Indonesia's readiness to contribute peacekeeping troops to Gaza. “We are ready to take our part in this journey towards peace,” Subianto said during a separate two-state solution conference co-hosted by France and Saudi Arabia. He added, “Indonesia is willing to provide peacekeeping forces.” His statement came on the same day that France and several other nations officially recognized the State of Palestine, joining countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Portugal, in a wave of international recognition aimed at increasing diplomatic pressure for a peaceful resolution. No Role for Hamas, Possible PA Involvement Though Israeli officials did not draft the proposed plan, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly been briefed on its contents. The plan includes no role for Hamas, which both the U.S. and Israel consider a terrorist organization and demand be fully disarmed and dismantled. Instead, the Palestinian Authority (PA) may be considered for a role in Gaza's governance, although Israel has repeatedly opposed any PA involvement in the territory under current circumstances. Mounting Death Toll and Escalation The proposal comes nearly two years into a war that has devastated Gaza. According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, over 65,000 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed, with thousands more wounded or missing. The enclave is also facing what international aid groups have labeled a man-made famine as Israel's siege continues. Recent developments have further complicated ceasefire efforts. Earlier this month, ceasefire talks brokered by Qatar were derailed after Israel launched unprecedented air strikes inside Qatari territory, allegedly targeting Hamas leaders. Hamas had reportedly accepted a truce proposal just hours before the strike. Israel later claimed it had also agreed to the deal. Israel’s military has since intensified its offensive in Gaza City, launching daily air raids, destroying residential neighborhoods, and displacing tens of thousands of civilians. Hamas Truce Offer Reportedly Awaiting Trump In a new twist, Fox News reported on Monday that Hamas has written a letter addressed directly to Trump, offering a 60-day ceasefire in exchange for the immediate release of half of the remaining 48 Israeli captives, approximately 20 of whom are believed to still be alive. The letter is said to be in the custody of Qatar, which is acting as a mediator, and may be handed over to Trump later this week. Neither Hamas nor the Qatari government have publicly confirmed the report. Looking Ahead Both Trump and Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani are scheduled to address the UNGA on Tuesday. Analysts say their speeches, along with any announcements from the closed-door meeting, could set the tone for renewed diplomacy—or escalate divisions—depending on the outcome. Meanwhile, Israeli forces continue their advance into Gaza’s urban core, backed by three armored and infantry divisions. Intense bombardments are also ongoing in the occupied West Bank, where the Israeli government is reportedly moving forward with plans to annex parts of the territory.
