Trump government start strict Green Card Review After Shooting Near the White House:

The US government has started a very strict review of Green Cards for people from several “countries of concern.” This action comes after an Afghan man shot two National Guard members near the White House. The shooter, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, attacked two service members on Wednesday in Washington, DC. Sarah Beckstrom, a 20-year-old Army specialist, died from the shooting. Andrew Wolfe, a 24-year-old Air Force staff sergeant, is still in critical condition. Because of this incident, the Trump administration has ordered stronger checks on immigrants from certain countries. US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Director Joseph Edlow said he has been told by President Donald Trump to re-check every Green Card given to people from high-risk countries. In a post on X, he said the safety of Americans is the top priority. He also blamed the previous Biden administration for allowing unsafe resettlement. Lakanwal came to the US in 2021 as part of an evacuation program for Afghan refugees during the US withdrawal from Afghanistan. His asylum was approved after Trump returned to office. Officials have confirmed that Indians living in the US will not be affected by this new policy. Only people from 19 high-risk countries will be reviewed. The 19 countries are: Afghanistan, Myanmar, Burundi, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Cuba, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Laos, Libya, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, Togo, Turkmenistan, Venezuela, and Yemen. This review is already in effect. It applies to all cases that were pending or newly filed on or after November 27. A Green Card allows a person to live and work permanently in the United States. After a few years, Green Card holders can also apply to become US citizens. This incident has started a new debate about immigration and security. The Trump administration says stronger checks will protect Americans, while others worry that strict reviews may create stress for immigrants who are already living legally in the country.
