The Trump administration is reportedly preparing a large-scale immigration enforcement operation in Chicago, according to reports from CNN and The New York Times on August 28, citing unnamed government sources. The operation could begin as early as next week and is expected to involve up to 200 Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials. It may also include armored vehicles and the use of a naval base outside Chicago as a staging area for the operation. This development comes after strong criticism from Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson—both Democrats—regarding President Trump’s earlier move to deploy the National Guard in Washington, D.C., and his suggestion to do the same in Chicago. When asked about the rumored operation, DHS and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) did not directly respond to USA TODAY’s inquiries.
