Tragedy struck at a temple in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, where two devotees lost their lives and 29 others were injured in a stampede. The chaos began when an electric shock occurred on the temple grounds, sending shockwaves of panic through the crowd. This unfortunate incident took place at the Awsaneshwar Mahadev temple during a ritual on the night of July 27-28, as devotees were engaged in the sacred act of offering water to Lord Shiva. On that Sunday night, the temple in the Haidergarh area was bustling with worshippers participating in the 'Jalabhishek' ceremony, a traditional ritual of offering water to deities, especially Lord Shiva, for worship and purification. This event is particularly significant during the month of Sawan, especially on Mondays. The Jalabhishek began at midnight, drawing a large crowd eager to take part in the festivities on the third Monday of Sawan. However, around 2 am, panic erupted when news of an electric shock spread, leading to a stampede. According to the District Magistrate, the incident was triggered when some monkeys jumped onto an overhead electric wire, causing it to snap and fall onto the temple shed, resulting in the electric shock. In the ensuing chaos, people scrambled in all directions, desperate to escape. Tragically, two devotees were pronounced dead at the scene, while 29 others sustained injuries and were transported to the Haidergarh and Trivediganj Community Health Centers. Those with more severe injuries were quickly taken to the district hospital. "All but one patient brought to the Haidergarh Community Health Centre have been discharged," shared Awadhesh Kumar Yadav, the Chief Medical Officer of Barabanki. "Ten individuals were taken to Trivediganj CHC, with two declared dead on arrival. The rest are stable and receiving treatment," he added. Police were already on-site, anticipating the large gathering, and a significant police presence was established following the stampede's outbreak. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his sorrow over the incident and extended heartfelt condolences to the families affected by this tragedy.
