Prime Minister Narendra Modi Launches BSNL's Swadeshi 4G Stack on Its BSNL Silver Jubilee:
New Delhi, September 27, 2025 — In a landmark move towards technological self-reliance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited’s (BSNL) indigenous ‘Swadeshi’ 4G stack, marking a historic day for Indian telecom. The event coincided with BSNL Silver Jubilee Anniversary, celebrating 25 years of service to the nation. This indigenous 4G technology rollout positions India among a select group of nations, including China, South Korea, Denmark, and Sweden, that manufacture their own telecom equipment. The launch is a significant milestone under the government’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Digital India’ initiatives. Over 97,500 Mobile Towers Commissioned As part of this ambitious deployment, over 97,500 mobile 4G towers have been commissioned, out of which 92,600 are powered by BSNL’s homegrown 4G technology. The project was executed at a cost of ₹37,000 crore and is powered entirely by indigenous equipment. An official stated that the Swadeshi 4G stack is cloud-based, future-ready, and easily upgradeable to 5G, ensuring seamless scalability for next-generation connectivity. The infrastructure also includes the largest cluster of solar-powered telecom towers in India, making it a green and sustainable solution. Empowering Rural India and Bridging the Digital Divide This rollout will bring mobile connectivity to over 26,700 remote villages, many of which are located in border and tribal areas, such as 2,472 villages in Odisha. The initiative is expected to connect more than 20 lakh new subscribers, significantly bridging the digital divide in rural India. In addition, the Prime Minister launched the Digital Bharat Nidhi, a mission-mode project that ensures 100% 4G saturation across 29,000 to 30,000 villages, further strengthening India’s digital backbone. A Strategic Push Against Import Dependency The introduction of a fully indigenous telecom stack is seen as a strategic step to reduce dependence on foreign telecom imports, especially in the wake of increased global trade tensions and rising import tariffs under previous international administrations. The move aligns with India’s aim to become self-reliant in critical technology sectors. A Vision for a Digital and Sustainable Future Describing the launch as a “transformative step,” officials noted that the Swadeshi 4G network will play a crucial role in realizing Prime Minister Modi’s vision of a connected and digitally empowered India. The combination of green energy-powered towers and cutting-edge cloud-native infrastructure underscores India’s commitment to both technological innovation and environmental sustainability. Conclusion BSNL’s Swadeshi 4G rollout is more than just a telecom upgrade—it is a bold statement of India’s growing technological prowess and a foundational step towards the 5G future. As millions across rural and remote regions come online, the impact on education, healthcare, agriculture, and entrepreneurship is expected to be transformative, marking a new chapter in India's digital journey.
