Mizoram’s Railway Dream Nears Reality with New Line to Sairang – A Step Closer to Aizawl and the Act East Vision
After decades of anticipation, the Indian Railways has commissioned a 51.38 km railway line to Sairang, bringing Mizoram significantly closer to full integration with India’s national railway grid. Located just 18 km from the state capital Aizawl, this long-awaited project is seen as a critical milestone not only for the Northeast but also for India's ambitious Act East Policy, which aims to boost connectivity with Southeast Asia. From 1.5 km to 51.38 km – A Transformational Leap Until recently, Mizoram had only a modest 1.5 km metre-gauge track linking Bairabi in Kolasib district to Silchar in Assam. This limited connectivity changed course when a gauge conversion project, first sanctioned in 2000, was extended to Sairang. The groundwork began in 2008-09, but the progress was hampered by frequent landslides, challenging terrain, manpower shortages, and logistical issues in transporting construction materials to remote locations. Engineering Feat Amid Challenges The Bairabi–Sairang section is a marvel of modern engineering. It comprises: 48 tunnels with a combined length of 12.85 km 142 bridges, including one with India’s tallest railway pier Despite the technical brilliance, the project also witnessed tragedy. In August 2023, a bridge collapse during construction claimed the lives of 18 workers, underscoring the extreme challenges faced during execution. The entire project cost over ₹5,020 crore and received final safety clearance in June 2025. It now awaits formal inauguration. What This Means for Mizoram and the Northeast Although the line currently stops at Sairang, 18 km shy of Aizawl, the connectivity it brings is a game-changer: Faster access to goods, services, and emergency aid Economic boost through better trade and tourism Foundation for future rail links to Southeast Asia under India’s Act East Policy This project is part of the Indian Railways’ broader initiative from the 2010s to connect all Northeastern state capitals to the national railway network, a mission that now inches closer to fulfillment. Conclusion: The Bairabi–Sairang railway line is more than just steel and concrete. It’s a story of resilience, ambition, and vision. As Mizoram edges closer to full railway connectivity, the dream of transforming the Northeast into a gateway to Southeast Asia is beginning to look like a reality.
