UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s upcoming visit to India from October 8 to 9 marks a significant moment in India-UK relations. His first official visit to the country since taking office, Mr. Starmer is set to meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss a range of pressing issues, including bilateral trade, global conflicts, and strategic cooperation under the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the two leaders will deliberate on “issues of regional and global importance.” The backdrop of this visit includes ongoing international tensions, notably the wars in Gaza and Ukraine. Both leaders have expressed support for the Gaza peace plan proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, signaling a shared interest in promoting peace and stability in the region. One of the major highlights of the visit is its economic focus. The visit comes just months after India and the UK signed the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), a landmark deal aimed at deepening economic ties. During his time in India, Mr. Starmer and PM Modi will attend the sixth edition of the Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai on October 9, where both are scheduled to deliver keynote addresses. This platform will allow the leaders to engage with business and tech leaders on the future of digital finance, innovation, and investment. Trade is expected to be a cornerstone of the dialogue. Prime Minister Modi, during his visit to London in July, had described the CETA as a “win-win” deal for both countries. He highlighted how it would enhance market access for Indian products like textiles, gems and jewellery, seafood, and engineering goods in the UK, while also making UK-made products such as aerospace components and medical devices more accessible for Indian industries and consumers. The MEA also confirmed that discussions would extend to critical areas such as defence and security, climate and energy, education, health, and people-to-people ties. The visit will serve as a platform to review the progress made under the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, guided by the 'Vision 2035' roadmap — a 10-year plan aimed at expanding cooperation across sectors. Importantly, Mr. Starmer’s visit comes just two months ahead of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s expected visit to India, placing added emphasis on the Ukraine conflict and India’s diplomatic balancing act between Western powers and Russia. As both leaders gear up for their meeting in Mumbai, expectations are high that this visit will strengthen bilateral cooperation, deepen economic engagement, and contribute to regional and global peace efforts.
