Keir Starmer Hails UK-India Trade Deal as "Launchpad" for Stronger Ties During Mumbai Visit:
UK Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has called the UK-India trade deal a "launchpad" for deeper ties, following a high-profile meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Mumbai. The two leaders met to discuss expanding economic, educational, and diplomatic relations, marking a significant moment in the future of India-UK relations. The meeting took place during Sir Keir's two-day visit to Mumbai, where he led the UK's largest-ever trade delegation—over 100 business leaders, entrepreneurs, university vice-chancellors, and cultural figures. His trip underlined the strategic importance of India to the UK’s economic and geopolitical future. A Historic UK-India Trade Deal Speaking at a press conference, Starmer described the UK-India trade deal as "huge for the UK" and "the most ambitious trade deal India has ever done." He emphasized that the agreement would serve as a platform for Britain to lead in key global sectors such as technology, life sciences, and renewable energy. "The opportunity is clear—just look at the sheer scale of India, the world's largest democracy on track to become the third-largest economy by 2028," Starmer said. While the trade deal has yet to be formally implemented, it has already shown significant impact. According to government figures, it has resulted in £1 billion in investment and the creation of nearly 7,000 jobs in the UK. The deal promises reduced tariffs on UK exports like Scotch whisky, cosmetics, medical devices, and luxury cars, while lowering taxes on Indian imports such as clothing, jewellery, seafood, and footwear. Diplomatic Talks: From Ukraine to Fossil Fuels Beyond trade, the leaders also discussed broader global issues. Starmer confirmed that the war in Ukraine was raised, including India's ongoing purchases of Russian oil, which have been controversial due to their role in funding Vladimir Putin’s war effort. "Yes, we did discuss that this morning with Prime Minister Modi," said Starmer. "We each went through the steps we're taking to bring about a resolution of the conflict." Modi, who has referred to Putin as a friend in the past, continues to push for an end to the war through dialogue and diplomacy. The leaders also talked about cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, and the shared goal of reducing dependence on fossil fuels—a key area of alignment in both countries' climate policies. Education and Digital Innovation at the Forefront Education played a major role during Starmer’s visit. He announced that UK universities would open more campuses in India, strengthening academic ties and contributing to local and British economies. The University of Lancaster and University of Surrey have already received approval, with more institutions like the University of York, Queen's University Belfast, and the University of Aberdeen expected to follow soon. The expansion is forecast to deliver a £50 million boost to the UK economy. “This will allow more Indian students to benefit from a world-class British education,” said Starmer, “while creating jobs and opportunities back home.” Starmer also met Nandan Nilekani, the founder of India’s revolutionary digital ID system, Aadhaar, to discuss the UK’s plans to introduce digital ID for workers. While controversial, with over 2.8 million signatures on a petition opposing it, the UK government argues the move is necessary to tackle illegal employment. Human Rights and Jagtar Singh Johal During the visit, Starmer raised the case of Jagtar Singh Johal, a British Sikh activist who has been held in an Indian prison for seven years without trial or conviction. Starmer’s decision to address the issue reflects pressure from human rights groups and British Sikhs demanding justice. A Warm Welcome in Mumbai Sir Keir received a vibrant welcome in Mumbai, with thousands of posters of him and Modi lining the streets, underlining the significance of the visit for both nations. As India rises on the global stage, the UK is clearly positioning itself as a strategic partner.
