Israel Threatens Major Ground Offensive in Gaza City as Global Outrage Grows;

Tensions in Gaza have escalated dramatically as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatens what he describes as a “powerful and intense ground operation” in Gaza City. The warning comes amid a surge in violence that has devastated the region since October 2023, leaving tens of thousands dead and many more injured. Netanyahu has called on civilians in northern Gaza to evacuate the city, further stoking fears of another wave of mass displacement. In recent days, multiple high-rise buildings, including the well-known as-Salam Tower, have been destroyed in Israeli airstrikes. These scenes of destruction have sparked international condemnation, with Palestinian group Hamas describing the demolitions as “one of the most heinous images of sadism and criminality.” Since the start of the war nearly a year ago, the toll on Gaza has been catastrophic. At least 64,522 Palestinians have been killed, and 163,096 others injured, according to health officials. Many victims remain trapped under the rubble, as rescue efforts are hampered by continuous bombardment and a lack of medical supplies. On the other side, the conflict began with the October 7 attacks in which 1,139 people were killed in Israel, and approximately 200 others were taken hostage, many of whom remain in captivity. In response to the mounting civilian casualties, Spain has taken bold diplomatic action. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has announced a total arms embargo on Israel, stating the move aims to “stop the genocide in Gaza” and “support the Palestinian population.” Spain is one of the first European countries to take such a strong stance, setting a precedent that may influence broader international policy. Humanitarian agencies and rights organizations have repeatedly called for an immediate ceasefire and unrestricted aid access to Gaza. However, diplomatic efforts have so far failed to bring an end to the violence, as both sides remain entrenched in one of the most destructive conflicts in recent Middle Eastern history. As global pressure mounts and the humanitarian crisis deepens, the eyes of the world remain fixed on Gaza. Whether Netanyahu follows through with his latest threat could determine the next chapter of a war that has already cost too many lives.
