HBO to Adapt “V for Vendetta” Into a Series With Pete Jackson as Writer:

HBO is officially developing a series adaptation of the iconic dystopian thriller “V for Vendetta”, marking a major revival of one of the most influential stories in modern pop culture. According to Variety, Pete Jackson has been tapped to write the upcoming adaptation, which will bring the haunting vision of a totalitarian Britain back to screens in a new format. The V for Vendetta franchise originated as a comic serial written by Alan Moore and illustrated by David Lloyd, first appearing in 1982 in the British anthology Warrior. DC Comics later took over publishing the story in 1988, cementing its status as a cult classic in graphic literature. Set in a dystopian Britain ruled by the fascist Norsefire party, the story follows a masked anarchist known only as V, who seeks to overthrow the oppressive government. Along the way, he allies with Evey Hammond, a young woman he rescues from the regime’s secret police, inspiring a revolution that challenges authoritarian control. The story was previously adapted into the acclaimed 2005 feature film “V for Vendetta,” directed by James McTeigue in his debut. The movie starred Hugo Weaving as the mysterious V, Natalie Portman as Evey Hammond, and Stephen Rea as Inspector Finch. The film became a cultural touchstone, with its striking imagery—especially the Guy Fawkes mask—becoming a symbol of resistance and rebellion worldwide. For the HBO adaptation, James Gunn and Peter Safran of DC Studios will serve as executive producers, ensuring the project aligns with DC’s evolving television vision. They’ll be joined by Ben Stephenson of Poison Pen and Leanne Klein of Wall to Wall Media, part of Warner Bros Television Studios UK. The series will be produced under the Warner Bros Television banner. While plot details and casting have yet to be announced, expectations are high that HBO’s version will delve deeper into the complex political and philosophical themes of the original story. With its mix of rebellion, ideology, and freedom, V for Vendetta remains as relevant as ever—a chilling reminder of how fragile liberty can be in the face of tyranny.
