Fátima Bosch of Mexico Wins Miss Universe 2025 Amid Drama in Bangkok:
Bangkok — Fátima Bosch Fernández of Mexico was crowned Miss Universe 2025 on Friday, in a competition that turned out to be as dramatic as it was glamorous. The 25-year-old designer not only won the crown but also gained widespread attention for standing up to public bullying from one of the pageant’s hosts. The first runner-up was Thailand’s 29-year-old Praveenar Singh, while Venezuela’s 25-year-old Stephany Adriana Abasali Nasser finished third. Completing the top five were Ahtisa Manalo, 28, from the Philippines, and Olivia Yacé, 27, of Ivory Coast. This year’s pageant became controversial during the sashing ceremony on November 4. Thai national director Nawat Itsaragrisil publicly scolded Bosch for allegedly not following guidelines for local promotional activities. When Bosch defended herself, he called security. In a bold move, she walked out, joined by several other contestants in solidarity—including Miss Universe 2024, Victoria Kjær Theilvig of Denmark. “What your director did is not respectful: he called me dumb,” Bosch told reporters. “If it takes away your dignity, you need to go.” The Miss Universe Organization condemned Nawat’s actions, calling it “public aggression” and “serious abuse.” Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, praised Bosch for speaking up, saying, “We women look more beautiful when we raise our voice and participate, because that has to do with the recognition of our rights.” Nawat later apologized, appearing tearful yet defiant. “If anyone affected and not comfortable it happened, I am so sorry,” he said, adding to the contestants, “It’s passed. OK? Are you happy?” Bosch, who studied fashion in Mexico and Italy, is known for her work in sustainable fashion, using discarded materials, and volunteering with sick children. She has also been involved in promoting environmental awareness, supporting migrants, and addressing mental health issues—efforts that make her win more than just a beauty title. The 2025 pageant faced additional drama. Two judges reportedly quit, one hinting at possible rigging, which organizers denied. Thai police also investigated alleged illegal online casino promotions linked to the event. Minor mishaps occurred as well; Miss Universe Jamaica Gabrielle Henry fell off the stage during the evening gown segment but was unharmed. Controversy is no stranger to Miss Universe. The 2021 pageant faced criticism for being held in Israel, upsetting supporters of the Palestinian cause. But this year, it was Bosch’s courage and dignity in the face of bullying that stole the spotlight—showing that standing up for oneself can be as powerful as wearing the crown.
