Fainting, jumping over barricades, and facing detention: Let’s dive into what unfolded at the protest march by the INDIA bloc.
On Monday, a high-voltage drama unfolded in Delhi as Opposition MPs, spearheaded by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, staged a protest march from the Parliament House to the Election Commission. Their aim? To voice their opposition against the special intensive revision of electoral rolls happening in Bihar. The Delhi Police set up barricades to block the MPs from advancing. Many of them chose to sit on the road, chanting slogans against the SIR in Bihar, while others climbed over the barricades to shout their grievances at the Election Commission. In the midst of the chaos, several MPs, including Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, were detained and taken to the Parliament Street Police Station, though they were later released. This latest episode is just one in a series of protests from the opposition within the Parliament complex during the ongoing Monsoon Session. The leaders have been pushing for a discussion on the SIR in both Houses. Earlier, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh reached out to the Election Commission, requesting a meeting with opposition leaders to discuss the SIR exercise in Bihar and other pressing matters. In his letter, he stated, "The MPs wish to collectively meet with the Commission on a host of issues, including but not limited to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls being undertaken in Bihar and proposed for other states as well." Ramesh expressed hope for a meeting that would uphold the highest traditions of our parliamentary democracy. Rahul Gandhi led the INDIA bloc's protest march to the Election Commission of India, opposing the SIR of the electoral rolls in Bihar, which is gearing up for elections. Dressed in sarees, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Mahua Moitra, and several other women leaders sat on the ground, climbed barricades, and raised slogans against the Election Commission. However, before the protest began, the Delhi Police announced that no permission had been sought for the demonstration.
