Delhi Police Files FIR Over AI-Generated Deepfake Video Featuring PM Modi and His Late Mother":
New Delhi, September 13: A major political controversy has erupted after the Bihar unit of the Indian National Congress shared an AI-generated deepfake video featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). The Delhi Police has registered an FIR in response to a complaint filed by the BJP, calling the video defamatory and morally offensive. The video, which has since gone viral, is a 36-second AI-generated clip that portrays PM Modi "dreaming" of his late mother, who is seen criticizing him for his political actions in poll-bound Bihar. The video is clearly marked "AI GENERATED" and captioned, "Maa appears in sahab’s dreams." Despite the disclaimer, the content has drawn strong condemnation from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies, who have labeled it as "shameful" and accused the Congress of stooping to a new low. FIR Registered Against Unnamed Persons The FIR was registered at the North Avenue Police Station in Delhi based on a complaint by BJP Delhi Election Cell Convenor Sanket Gupta. According to Gupta, the video is not only an intentional attempt to malign the image of the Prime Minister but also a violation of ethical boundaries and the dignity of women. Citing sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the FIR includes charges under: Section 336 – Forgery Section 340(2) – Forged electronic record used as genuine Section 352 – Intentional insult to provoke breach of peace Section 356(2) – Defamation Section 61(2) – Criminal conspiracy While the accused are currently unnamed, the police have initiated a probe into the matter and are expected to summon individuals associated with the creation and sharing of the video. Political Reactions and Outrage Reacting to the development, BJP leaders slammed the Congress for resorting to what they called “cheap tactics” to gain political mileage ahead of elections. “This is not just political propaganda—it’s a serious breach of decency and legality. Dragging someone’s late mother into political mudslinging is unacceptable,” said a senior BJP leader. Meanwhile, the Congress has not yet issued an official statement on the FIR, though party insiders have claimed that the video was meant to be satirical and was shared with a clear "AI GENERATED" label to avoid misinformation. Rising Concerns Over AI Misuse in Politics This incident adds to growing concerns over the misuse of AI-generated content and deepfakes in Indian politics. With elections around the corner, experts warn that such digital tools can easily blur the line between satire and misinformation, potentially influencing public opinion and sparking unrest. Cyber law experts believe that this case could set an important precedent for how India regulates AI-generated content, especially when it targets high-profile individuals or emotionally sensitive topics. As the investigation unfolds, this case serves as a stark reminder of the challenges that lie ahead in navigating truth and technology in the digital age of politics.
