Acharya Devvrat Gets Additional Charge of Maharashtra After CP Radhakrishnan Elected Vice-President of India:
September 12, 2025 | New Delhi/Mumbai — In a significant development in India’s political landscape, Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat has been given the additional responsibility of Maharashtra Governor after the incumbent, C.P. Radhakrishnan, officially stepped down from the post on Thursday, September 11, 2025. The move comes following Mr. Radhakrishnan's election as the 14th Vice-President of India. President Droupadi Murmu issued the formal order appointing Acharya Devvrat to take over the duties of the Maharashtra Governor, in addition to his current role as the Governor of Gujarat. A press release from the President’s Office stated, “Consequent upon demitting the office of the Governor of Maharashtra C.P. Radhakrishnan due to his election as the Vice-President of India, the President has appointed Acharya Devvrat, Governor of Gujarat, to discharge the functions of the Governor of Maharashtra, in addition to his own duties.” Acharya Devvrat: A Brief Profile Acharya Devvrat, 66, has been serving as the Governor of Gujarat since 2019. A dedicated educator and Arya Samaj pracharak, he is known for his commitment to traditional Indian values and education. Before entering public service, he served as the principal of a Gurukul in Kurukshetra, Haryana. His leadership style has been appreciated for blending modern governance with cultural integrity. CP Radhakrishnan's New Role and Reflections C.P. Radhakrishnan, 67, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nominee, won the vice-presidential election on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, defeating the INDIA bloc’s candidate, Justice (Retd) B. Sudershan Reddy, by a margin of 152 votes. His swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for Friday, September 12, in New Delhi. Reflecting on his tenure in Maharashtra, Radhakrishnan described it as the “happiest period” of his political journey. “I am an uncompromising nationalist,” he said during an informal farewell gathering. “There is a beautiful line in the Maharashtra Geet referring to Delhi. My move to Delhi feels in many ways like going to guard another throne. I feel privileged that after former President Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma, I too have the opportunity of moving from the post of Governor of Maharashtra to that of the Vice-President of India.” Radhakrishnan also acknowledged his time in the political opposition, particularly in Tamil Nadu, which he said shaped his inclusive vision. “We must always think of society as a whole, not just of one section,” he added. Warm Wishes and Ceremony Attendees Upon his arrival in Delhi on Wednesday, September 10, Radhakrishnan was warmly welcomed by Justice (Retd) Sudershan Reddy and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde extended his congratulations and confirmed his attendance at the swearing-in ceremony. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will also be present at the event. With Acharya Devvrat now overseeing Maharashtra in addition to Gujarat, the state is expected to maintain continuity in governance until a permanent appointment is made.
